About
I study Central American colonial and nineteenth-century art and architecture, with an emphasis on Salvadoran religious architecture. I try to understand the changing dynamics of religious space in Central America, from its beginnings in the sixteenth century to its commodification of tourist culture in the twenty-first century. I seek to answer the questions: how do these buildings shape and influence the identities of those who use(d) them? How does religious space change (or remain the same) in the face of vast changes in politics, religion, media, and society?
Specifically, I try to understand the variety in perception of a certain artwork or building across different social classes as they relate to religious experience.
